Antonio Banderas- Wine Tourism Plans in Spain

The world´s favorite actor from Spain, Antonio Banderas, has long been interested in wine (he is part owner of a winery called “Anta Banderas ” in Ribera del Duero, making quality wines and olive oil) and he has announced last week that he anticipates some exciting new wine tourism projects at his estate. They are looking at the possibility of a wine hotel, also launching conferences and forums on wine and literature and he is quoted as saying “I want to promote wine tourism!”- sounds great to us! Antonio, we are waiting for more news on this wine hotel!

Many celebrities are attracted to the world of wine, from Gerard Depardieu who has a winery in the Loire (Chateau de Tigné) among other pet wine projects, to Jurassic Park star  Sam Neill who owns the Two Paddocks estate in New Zealand. And of course the most famous Hollywood personality involved in wine is Francis Ford Coppola whose Napa estate is hugely successful.

Most Beautiful Castles in Ireland

ROMANTIC IRISH CASTLES-

Most beautiful castles in Ireland

The green, misty, and alluring island of Ireland boasts a treasure trove of castles and here is our selection of our favorite castles in the Emerald Isle, many of which you can visit inside and one of which which is even a luxury hotel!

1. Lismore Castle

This stunning fairy tale castle is surprisingly not on the main tourist path in Ireland, and thanks for that. Located in the southeast of the country close to both Cork and Waterford, Lismore is absolutely one of the prettiest castles and gardens in Ireland, if not greater Europe.

2. Ashford Castle

One of the most striking castles and grounds in Europe- and you can sleep here! Located in the west of the country in the atmospheric county Mayo, not far from where the Quiet Man was filmed.

3. Kilkenny Castle

One of our favorite towns in Ireland is also home to one of its loveliest castles.

4. Cahir Castle

Off the beaten track, this little secret corner of county Tipperary is delightful. There are some wonderful sights, restaurants, adorable B&Bs and heritage centers like the castle of Cahir here. Even if driving from Cork to Dublin, it´s worth a quick look and coffee, very picturesque.

5. Ross Castle

Think “Excalibur” as this is the kind of epic setting where you can imagine the sword rising from the lake. The backdrop of the purple mountains, smattered with snow in winter is just gorgeous. You can take boats here at Ross castle out to the meeting of the waters, and this whole part of county Kerry has wonderful uplifting landscapes.

6. Blarney Castle

The ultimate castle visit in Ireland. Yes, very touristy and the legend about kissing the Blarney stone sounds embellished, but the visit here is genuinely fascinating, and climbing to the roof top overlooking the delightful wooded grounds is a major highlight. Love it and a “must do” while in Cork.

7. Classiebawn Castle

This striking castle is unfortunately privately owned (well, fortunate for the owners!) and not possible to visit, but if you happen to find yourself in the dreamy northwest of Ireland, this castle overlooking the village of Mullaghmore is worth seeking out to get a look at and a quick pic.

8. Johnstown Castle

This handsome castle in country Wexford in the southeast of Ireland dates back to the 1800´s and sits amid splendid gardens and woodland. The castle cannot be visited but you can visit the gardens, complete with peacocks!

9. Trim Castle

Anglo Norman castle located in a “heritage town” in County Meath, lovely.

10. Bunratty Castle

Your first impression is that it might be a tourist trap as it is listed in virtually every tour guide there is. What a nice surprise to discover that it is actually a tastefully restored medieval castle complete with a sympathetically replicated traditional Irish village. Recommended! And located within arms reach of the wonderful Adare Manor and Dromoland castle hotels. They do fun medieval banquets for dinner, too.

Michelin guide Italy 2010

MICHELIN STARS IN ITALY FOR 2010

FOODIE NEWSFLASH: This very morning the 2010 edition of the Michelin Red guide for Italy was presented in Milan at the Triennale and we couldn’t miss it!!

by Simona Piccinelli, Italy specialist and Milan correspondent

Just as Gualtiero Marchesi did last year, Ezio Santin (chef and owner of the Antica Osteria sul Ponte in Cassinetta di Lugagnano) has decided not to be in the Michelin guide, as quote “after 33 years under examination, we don’t think a guide can improve our work”.

Is this a new trend of big “grand old men” chefs rejecting the Michelin?

Is Michelin losing its power and authority?

We don’t know and will keep our eyes peeled on this, but in the meantime we are happy to announce that the new 3 star restaurant in Italy, Da Vittorio, is also one of our favorites. Not only for the excellence of their cuisine, but also because the Cerea family happen to also be extremely nice, professional, and generous people. We worked with them during some events and catering and I can really say that they have a special place in my heart!

So “bravo” to Francesco, Bruna, Chicco, Raffaella and Bobo! Father Vittorio (who passed away 4 years ago) would be so very proud of all of them.

Da Vittorio team

The other 3 stars are a carry over from last year, so nothing new to report there. Here is the list of our faves and the dishes we liked most and would kill to try again:

1. Dal Pescatore di Canneto sull’Oglio (Mn)

chef Nadia Santini

Dishes:
Tortelli di zucca
Frog Legs with herbs

2. Enoteca Pinchiorri di Firenze

chef Annie Feolde

Dishes:

All about Burrata
“Agnolotti” filled with polenta and tossed with scampi, tomatoes and black olives

3. La Pergola di Roma

chef Heinz Beck

Dishes:
Lamb with artichokes with garlic purée, sweetbreads and pecorino cheese
Tortelli filled with lamb tossed with pecorino cheese and mint

4. Le Calandre di Rubano (Pd)

chef Massimilaino Alajmo

Dishes:

Cuttle fish cappuccino
Roquefort cheese mousse with iced strawberry crust

5. Al Sorriso di Soriso (No)

chef Luisa Valazza

Dishes:
Sorriso risotto, a dream come true for risotto lovers (like me!) with prawns, artichokes, pine nut kernel and saffron
Fassone beef braised with Barolo sauce

MICHELIN STARRED RESTAURANTS IN ITALY CLOSE THEIR DOORS

What made such an impression on me was the number of Michelin starred establishments that closed this year:

4 Mori in Varese, Locanda del Palazzo in Barile (Potenza), Via romana in Bordighera (Imperia), La Bitta nella pergola in Genova, Vesta in Tivoli (Roma), L’Acquamatta in Capolona (Arezzo),  Conti Roero in Monticelli d’Alba (Cuneo), Il Gallopapa in Castellina in Chianti (Siena),  Terrazza in Montecchio di Crosara (VR), L’Arsenale in Cavegnano d’Adda (LO), Castello Banfi in Montalcino (Siena), Fini in Modena.

MICHELIN INSPECTORS

Have you ever wondered how to become a Michelin inspector? Each inspector  travels over 30.000 km, has over 200 meals in restaurants and spends over 160 nights in hotels, per year. The majority of the inspectors come from hotel schools and/or is well-experienced in the hospitality business. After sending a request to the Red Guide, you will have a meeting with a senior inspector in a restaurant and after that you will have to write a report about restaurant details (service, mise en place, whether your neighbor´s plate was empty or not when he left, etc) and meal details (food quality, cooking, raw materials, etc). If you do a superb good job, you will spend some months in European restaurants with a senior inspector and finally you will be able to work on your own!

The 2010 guide will be released at all fine bookshops on November 26th.
