Michelin star prices, good food but not very special. Service by school children without experience. Go somewhere else

Went with my wife to Il Gallo d’Oro while in Funchal. Major disappointment: prices were Michelin quality but the rest definitely was not. The food was bland — it felt like the kitchen was afraid of having taste in the food. Not enough salt in the amuse-bouche, a tiramisu that tasted like you ate just cocoa powder and mascarpone cheese… and they were boasting with the tiramisu in an article I happened to read!

The service was not what I would have expected as well, since the waiters seemed to make it their life’s job to avoid us. Imagine having your water bottle on the other side of the table and nobody checking your glasses for a refill? Not in a Michelin star place.

Seeing this and finding out that there are significant differences between two-star and three-star places it makes me wonder whether or not the Michelin star system actually is an objective system. I know, for example, a two-star place which beats the hell out of a three-star place I know. These are both not in Portugal, though.

Ate once at the Sao Gabriel. Pricey, rather pretentious and okay but not really what I would regard as worthy of a Michelin star. They make an effort but don’t succeed 100%.
