Buckle your seatbelts, as traffic in Naples is not for the faint hearted! You’ll appreciate that you have a driver to maneuver through the mind boggling sea of merging lanes, oncoming trams and seemingly insane taxi drivers. Arrive to your five star old grand dame of a hotel, right in the Bay of Naples overlooking the pretty “Castel dell’ Ovo” fortress and small marina. The morning is yours on your own to settle in, with our suggestions for lunch and sightseeing.

In the late afternoon your driver will collect you and you’ll head to a palace where a Campania wine tasting is in store. Learn all about the native Campania grape varietals like Falanghina, Greco, Coda di Volpe and Fiano (white); and Aglianico & Piedirosso (red). Taste cru wines from some of the best estates including Montevetrano, Mustilli, Viticoltori De Conciliis, and Mastroberardino. And follow with a fabulous Michelin starred dinner.

In the Piazza San Domenico Maggiore (in the “cuore di Napoli”, or “Heart of Naples”), the Palazzo Petrucci is one of Campania´s finest restaurants. It earned a Michelin star for its gourmet techniques and superb wine cellar and you’ll enjoy a tasting menu paired with top Italian wines. Chef Lino Scarallo is one of Southern Italy’s “hot new chefs” and you’ll taste specialties like mezzelune di patata ripiena di baccalà; spaghetti con alici fresche e provolone del monaco; and agnello scottato al profumo di aranco. Near the Teatro San Carlo (the oldest opera house in Naples, on a par with Milan’s La Scala), you’ll sit down to a charming lunch of the “Vera Pizza” next. Naples is indeed where the Pizza Margherita was invented and you can pick the pizza of your choice (try the Pizza with Buffalo Mozzarella- to die for!), served with “panzarotti stuffed with Fiori di Zucca, and scarola with raisins and pine nuts. Winemaker superstar Riccardo Cotarella is the man in charge of Villa Matilde´s fabulous wines and you’ll taste the best six they have to offer including the highly lauded and elegantissimo Vigna Camarato (made with a blend of 80% Aglianico and 20% Piedirosso), the Primitivo based “Cecubo” and the wonderful Falanghina based “Caracci”, among other excellent wines. A traditional lunch will follow served with estate wines.

And the wine tasting adventure continues! Today your driver will sweep you away to the wine roads of Irpinia. This particularly lush and mountainous wine region is striking and very pretty. Apart from wine, Irpinia is also a culinary destination, known for its black truffles and chestnuts. Your first stop today is in Taurasi, a cru wine hamlet coined the “Barolo of the South”. Your first winery of the day is at the darling Antonio Caggiano estate, one of Campania´s best boutique producers. Visit the small cellar and vineyard before sitting down to a tasting of exceptional wines such as his Aglianico based Taurasi Vigna Macchia dei Goti (simply divine) and the barrel aged FiaGrè (made with 70% Fiano di Avellino 70% and 30% Greco di Tufo). Magnifico!

Travel next to Sorbo Serpico, and arrive to the exceptional Feudi di San Gregorio wine estate. One of our all-time favorite Italian wineries, Feudi boats an ultra modern cellar (designed by Japanese architect Hikaru Mori), splendid herb gardens and a Michelin starred gourmet restaurant. Feudi di San Gregorio are pioneers in Campania for championing the local varietals like Aglianico and Falanchina, and apart from Campania they are also investing heavily in the regions of Puglia and Basilicata. After a short tour of the cellars, lunch will be organized for you at their excellent Marennà restaurant. In a minimalist chic dining room you’ll have the chef’s tasting menu paired with estate wines including their Greco based bubbly made by star winemaker Riccardo Cotarella and consulting French Champagne maker Anselme Selosse (one of France’s cult winemakers). Buon appetito!

Tonight you are heading to the beautiful Amalfi Coast, and on the way to Ravello you can stop into Vietri to pick up some of their famous ceramics. Campania´s most important ceramic center, Vietri has a cute old town with gorgeous shops squeezed in next to each other. Our favorite ones include Ceramica Vietritaly, Ceramica Artistica Solimene Vincenzo, Ceramiche Margherita and Ceramica Vietri Scotto. If time permits you can also pop into Cetara, an authentic fisherman’s village and one of the only villages on this coastline that the local still make their livelihood from fishing. The thing to buy here is the Colatura d´ Alici, a modern version of the Ancient Roman “Garum” (a 2000 year old recipe of a sardine based sauce). In the early evening, pull up to the front door of your fantastic hotel located in a glam palazzo in ravishing Ravello. Benvenuti in Costiera Amalfitana!
