Profile of Capafons-Osso Winery

Wine Map Priorat
Profile of Priorat Wine Region

Capafons-Ossó, Priorat - Spain This super winery has vineyards from both Priorat and the nearby appellation of Montsant, named after the Montsant Mountains. Run by the very, very charming Francesc Capafons, this tiny boutique winery is swiftly making a name for themselves. Prices have remained firmly rooted on planet earth (some other wines from Priorat have started to fetch rather ridiculous prices) and this winemaking family are sincerely dedicated to quality. Francesc has an amazing sense of humor and vitality and he will convert you to Priorat and Montsant wines, in case you already weren't! The Capafons family have been working the vineyards wine in the region for literally 5 generations, and the next logical step was winemaking. The cellars are state of the art (obviously with the best French oak and stainless steel tanks for hygiene control), but they still practice age-old techniques such as clarifying the wine with egg whites.

The estate "Mas de Masos" is a located in a truly beautiful area with its own unique microclimate. The terroir of Montsant is drastically different to the terroir of Priorat. Priorat is known for its slate like soils (called "Llicorella"), vineyard slopes reminiscent of the Douro, microscopic yields and old vines. Montsant is defined by its bright red clay enriched soils, and old vine Grenache as well. The Capafons vineyards are actually integrated with forest and natural areas full of wild flowers, poppies, pine trees, etc, which effectively keeps the natural ecosystem in balance. The flavor of the wines is certainly influenced by the minerally soils and the abundance of wild herbs. Capafons, like many of the wineries in Priorat and Montsant, are practically organic (without calling themselves as such). Their viticulture practices are as ecological as possible. Capafons, for example, use no herbicides. The resulting wines are powerful (all of the wines in this region top 13-14%) yet elegantly complex.
