We have created this luxurious Mercedes chauffeured wine tasting excursion for wine lovers visiting Barcelona looking for a VIP experience. Your private driver will pick you up at your Barcelona hotel and you´ll be swept away for a full day in the Cava winelands. The ancient wine region of Penedès has been producing wine since Phoenician times, and has been famous internationally since the 19th century when many of the big Chateaux style estates (like Codorniu and Freixenet) began to export their traditional method sparkling Cava wines (made in the same way as Champagne). Cava is made with the native Catalan grapes Xarel.lo and Parellada and often blended with Chardonnay and Macabeo (a grape known as “Viura” in other Spanish wine regions such as Rioja).
In the last few decades, the Penedès has become synonymous with ultra high quality red wines with pioneering Miguel Torres and Jean Leon making waves in the wine world with cult wines “Mas la Plana” and “Zemis”. The region is home to hundreds of wineries, from enormous “Modernista” (similar to Art Noveau) cellars to small boutique wineries, nearly all family owned. Apart from vineyards, Penedès is also home to scenic olive groves, peach trees and almonds. The cuisine here is Mediterranean, with a focus on seafood, fresh vegetables, olive oil and wine. Today you will visit two contrasting cellars and enjoy vineyard tours followed by spectacular private wine tastings. 9AM you will be picked up at your Barcelona hotel or cruise by your elegant driver and luxury Mercedes. Your first wine tour will begin at a Napa style small design winery where you will receive a very friendly welcome followed by a private tour of the boutique estate. Enjoy a walk through the experimental vineyard where along with native grapes you´ll also see more familiar ones such as Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Carry on to a lovely tasting room, all windows, overlooking the gorgeous vineyards. You´ll taste four of the estate´s best wines here and receive personalized tasting sheets with your name as a keepsake. Your next stop is to a contrasting but equally wonderful estate, Parès Baltá.
The second winery is family run, owned by two brothers whose wives are the superb winemakers. Here you will be received by the owners themselves and first enjoy a walk through their gorgeous vineyard. Carry on to a private tour of the winery with fascinating commentary throughout. Your tasting will consist of seven wines, which include two quite spectacular cavas (bubbly), interesting varietal whites and reds (including the top red Absis) and even an excellent red wine from this cellar’s Priorat estate. After an utterly charming visit, you will say goodbye to your hosts and head to a late lunch at the stylish Tibio restaurant.
Enjoy a VIP welcome from the chef and a special tasting menu organized for you with five courses and various wine pairings. Return to Barcelona in the early evening after this unforgettable food and wine tour of the Penedès. We look forward to seeing you again!
