Your chauffeur will collect you from your Madrid hotel in a luxurious Mercedes and bring you back in the late afternoon.
Madrid is Spain’s exciting capital and a fascinating destination for wine lovers. There are some real gems for wine enthusiasts here, from the dusty and nostalgic La Venencia sherry bar to the stylish Taberneros wine and tapas bar. Madrid also has its own wine country on the city’s outskirts, around the town of Navalcarnero.
But Madrid is also a superb base for exploring the wine country and historic towns of central Spain. South of the capital, towards Toledo, red wines take center stage, with Tempranillo joined by Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This romantic, arid landscape is punctuated by windmills, clay “Tinajas,” the traditional earthenware vessels once widely used for wine, and the ubiquitous black bulls mounted on hillsides across Spain by the sherry company Osborne.

Day 1Madrid-Toledo-Madrid
Adolfo's Restaurant in Toledo
Morning: Your luxurious Mercedes, driven by an experienced chauffeur, will arrive at your hotel in Madrid, and you will head southwest for the journey to Bargas, just outside Toledo, stopping at a wine estate for a privately arranged visit and tasting.
Arrive at a boutique estate such as the prestigious Finca Loranque winery, where Pablo Eguzkiza of Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez has long advised the winemaking. The cellar is in a pretty 18th-century farmhouse, and the vineyards are picturesque. You will receive a special private tour, visiting the vines and learning all about the native and imported varietals here. Finca Loranque uses the Spanish noble Tempranillo grape and Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. You will tour the barrel cellar and taste wine from the barrique. A complete tasting of their wines will conclude the visit, accompanied by some delicious (and local) Manchego cheese- enjoy!
You will visit the stunning town of Toledo next, around 20 minutes’ drive from the wine estate, and your private guide will take you on a walking tour of the city’s most spectacular monuments. Jews, Moors, and Christians lived for centuries side by side during the “Convivencia,” and each of these groups left their mark on Toledo both architecturally and gastronomically. You will explore the magnificent Cathedral and its art gallery (featuring paintings by El Greco, Titian, Van Dyck, and Goya ); walk along the narrow cobblestoned streets taking in the Mudéjar Puerta del Sol and the 14th-century Sinagoga del Tránsito, or Sinagoga de Samuel ha-Leví, built under the patronage of the royal treasurer Samuel ha-Leví (the Jewish treasurer under Pedro the Cruel); and the Iglesia de Santo Tomé, dating from the early 14th century and home to El Greco’s celebrated Burial of the Lord of Orgaz. Finally, your guide will drop you off at your next port of call- lunch!
Lunch: An ultra-gourmet seasonal tasting menu awaits at the upscale Adolfo Restaurante, featuring dishes that showcase traditional Spanish ingredients with modern culinary techniques. The menu changes with the seasons and the best produce available, with specialties that might include organic green asparagus from Camuñas with black truffle, suckling pig, rock sea bass, or Toledo’s emblematic red partridge. All dishes are paired with excellent local and regional wines from Adolfo’s fantastic cellar.
Evening: In the late afternoon, your driver will transfer you back to Madrid, with the wines, cooking and history of Toledo still fresh in your mind.
