Winery Overview
Located in the breathtaking Salnés Valley, in the northwest region of Pontevedra, lies the picturesque fishing village of Cambados, where Martín Códax winery has established itself as a prominent player on the international stage, showcasing the captivating Albariño grape variety. Despite being relatively new in Spanish winemaking history, with less than 20 years of operation, this Galician winery has rapidly gained recognition for its commitment to producing exceptional, pure, and refreshing wines while effectively spreading the word about its remarkable offerings. Setting itself apart from others in the region, Códax exclusively cultivates its estate grapes rather than sourcing them from local growers, ensuring meticulous control over the winemaking process.
At the helm of this prestigious winery is Luciano Amoedo Rodino, a visionary winemaker who not only founded the esteemed “Rías Baixas” Denomination of Origin but is also widely recognized as a leading figure in the world of wine. Bodegas Martín Códax proudly presents three prominent brands – Códax, Burgáns, and Organistrum – all crafted exclusively from the 100% Albariño grape. While Catalan winemaker Miguel Torres claims that Albariño is a cousin of Riesling, introduced to Spain by German pilgrims en route to Santiago de Compostela, the local regulatory council holds a different view. Nevertheless, there is unanimous agreement that this grape variety is among Spain’s most esteemed and noble.
This enchanting corner of Spain offers an unparalleled experience for those who appreciate delectable cuisine and exquisite wines. More reminiscent of Celtic lands than the stereotypical image of arid Spain, the landscape captivates visitors with its striking resemblance to Ireland. Here, one can indulge in Europe’s finest freshly caught seafood, complemented by delightful white and light red wines. With its authenticity and indelible charm, Galicia presents an original and unforgettable destination for wine enthusiasts. Among the many wineries to explore, Bodegas Martín Códax stands out as one of the finest and most dynamic, promising an extraordinary wine tour experience.
