Remelluri Winery Guide
Winery Overview
The origins of Remelluri Winery can be traced back to the 14th century when monks from the Toloño monastery first established vineyards in the area. However, it wasn’t until the 1960s that the estate gained prominence under the guidance of Jaime Rodríguez Salís, who revitalized the vineyards and implemented modern winemaking techniques. Since then, the winery has been passed down through the family, with Telmo Rodríguez, Jaime’s nephew, currently leading the estate.
One of Remelluri Winery’s defining characteristics is its commitment to organic and biodynamic farming practices. The vineyards were certified organic in 2013. The estate spans approximately 150 hectares, with vineyards on slopes that vary in elevation and soil composition, resulting in diverse microclimates and grape varieties.
Remelluri Winery produces a range of wines that showcase the unique characteristics of the Rioja region. Their portfolio includes red, white, and rosé wines, with their red wines being the most acclaimed. The winery predominantly works with traditional Rioja grape varieties such as Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Graciano, although they also experiment with international varietals to create innovative blends.
The winery’s winemaking process involves combining traditional and modern techniques. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted before fermentation in stainless steel or wooden vats. The wines are then aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels, allowing them to develop complexity and structure over time. As a result, Remelluri wines are known for their elegance, balance, and ability to age gracefully.
Remelluri Winery has received widespread recognition for the quality of its wines. They have consistently garnered high scores from wine critics and have been included in prestigious wine guides. The estate’s flagship wine, “Remelluri Gran Reserva,” is highly regarded and considered among the finest expressions of Rioja. Additionally, their white wine, “Remelluri Blanco,” has gained a reputation for purity and freshness.
Overall, Remelluri Winery is a testament to Rioja’s rich winemaking heritage. With its unwavering commitment to quality, sustainable practices, and the expression of terroir, the winery continues to produce exceptional wines that exemplify the essence of the region.
