Guelbenzu Winery Guide

Winery Overview

Located in the historic town of Cascante in Navarra, Spain, the Guelbenzu winery boasts a rich winemaking tradition that dates back to Roman times. This town has produced exceptional wines for centuries, situated along the principal Roman Road to Astorga in northwestern Spain.

Bodegas Guelbenzu, a renowned family-run winery, has sold its exceptional wines commercially since the 1800s. Their dedication to crafting some of the finest wines in Navarra has earned them a well-deserved reputation. Their journey towards international recognition began in 1851 when the Guelbenzus showcased their wines at the prestigious London Universal Exhibition. Their exceptional craftsmanship garnered acclaim, and they later secured a prestigious wine award in Bordeaux in 1882.

However, the collective efforts of the eight Guelbenzu family members and the visionary winemaker Joseba Altuna in the 1980s propelled the winery into the global spotlight. Their passion, expertise, and innovative approach revolutionized the winemaking process, solidifying their present-day fame and high regard in the wine world.

Situated at the base of the Moncayo mountain, the winery’s vineyard covers 43 hectares of land and boasts infertile, gravelly soils originating from the ancient Tertiary era. One of its standout features is the soil’s unique texture, facilitating excellent drainage, a boon for viticulture. Moreover, the vines thriving in this terroir naturally yield low quantities, offering concentrated flavors while showcasing their inherent resilience against drought.

Bodegas Guelbenzu stands as a true boutique winery with charm and elegance. Its picturesque location adds to the allure, providing a captivating backdrop for wine enthusiasts. With its fascinating history and dynamic atmosphere, Bodegas Guelbenzu is undoubtedly one of Spain’s most compelling and noteworthy wineries today.

Among their impressive portfolio, Guelbenzu Evo stands as the pinnacle of their winemaking achievements. This exquisite wine is significant in their collection, both in name and essence. The word “EVO” derives from the concept of eternal things and boundless time, capturing the spirit of longevity and continuity. “Evohe! Evohe!” was the exclamation uttered by the Bacchae, the priestesses of the god Bacchus, during their joyous Bacchanalia celebrations, signifying an enduring celebration. Guelbenzu Evo embodies this eternal essence, representing the winery’s commitment to crafting wines that stand the test of time and evoke a sense of celebration with every sip.
