Profile of Somontano Wine Region
This enclave in the Northeast of Spain is a treasure cove of intriguing wines. Founded only in 1986, Vinas
del Vero is one of the Somontano region's best producers, known for world class Chardonnays and "Vinos de
Autor" (designer, boutique wines). The Vinas del Vero estate is located near the river Vero and the Pyrenees
mountains, which offers a superb terroir for grape cultivation. The bodega (winery) is ultra modern and there
are 550 hecatares of premium vineyards spread out over various microclimates. On site is a modern production
center with a curious vertical layout over 12 meters high. The grapes go through the winery at the top, where
they are selected and pulled by gravity downwards and begin the maceration and fermenting processes.
In 2003, the 2001 Chardonnay collection received best ratings in Enoforum. In 2002 they received winery of
the year in Guide to Gourmet Wines. The Secastilla and Blecua brands are up and coming prestigious brands
(Blecua being the most expensive) that are currently made in very small quantities, while the Vinas del
Vero brand is the best-known. The winery has a capacity of 70,000 hectoliters and maintains very modern
equipment. It has 250 stainless steel tanks and uses about 6,000 American and French oak barrels. About one
third of the output of this winery goes to export, the rest is consumed domestically. The wines from the
Vinas del Vero range are some of the best value wines in Spain and are consistently excellent quality.
