The Douro Valley is one of the world’s most gorgeous wine regions, and one of the best ways to fully appreciate it is to travel through it by river cruise. We created this exceptional private tour for wine lovers looking for a luxurious wine-tasting day excursion from Porto. The Douro River is one of the most important wine rivers in Europe, on a par with the Rhine, the Loire, and the Mosel. The river begins in Spain, where it is known as the Duero, and the Ribera del Duero wine region stretches along its banks. It then travels for over 200 kilometers through Portugal before reaching the Atlantic at Porto. The most beautiful part of the Douro is the Portuguese stretch between Mesão Frio and Pinhão, where vineyards precariously cling to the steep terraces on either side of the river.
The landscape looks like giant steps, and the views are truly majestic. This is where Port wines are produced in historic quintas, or wine estates, and the region draws wine collectors. Some of Portugal’s most famous wines are made here, from Barca Velha to the great Ports of Quinta do Noval. Excellent estates including Quinta do Crasto, Quinta da Pacheca, and Quinta do Infantado produce both Port and concentrated, powerful dry wines.

Day 1Porto - Douro Valley - Porto
Morning: Your private chauffeur will collect you from your Porto hotel for the approximately 90-minute drive to the Douro Valley. You’ll have opportunities to stop for photos or a comfort break en route. At Pinhão Quay, your private yacht will be waiting, with your onboard host and skipper ready to welcome you aboard. The private yacht is selected to suit the number of guests in your party. Each yacht has a bar, with refreshments served on board, and a dedicated host to look after you throughout the cruise.
You will enjoy a splendid cruise, sipping chilled white Port and admiring the steeply terraced vineyards on either side of the river. You will leave the yacht near Quinta da Gricha, Churchill’s flagship vineyard and one of the Douro Valley’s most picturesque estates. From the river, continue to the estate for your privately arranged visit, beginning among the vineyards as your guide explains how the terroir shapes its Douro wines and Ports. The walk also includes the Gricha Fountain, from which the quinta takes its name.
Inside the lodge, you will see the historic granite lagares dating from 1852, where Port grapes are still foot-trodden. We will then arrange a private tasting of Churchill’s Douro wines and Ports, selected to showcase the estate’s dry wines, aged Tawny and Vintage Port.
Lunch: By now, you will almost certainly have worked up an appetite; at least, we hope so. Lunch features regional dishes paired with Churchill’s wines. Weather permitting, it is served beneath the orange trees on the estate patio, overlooking the Douro Valley.
After lunch, reboard your private yacht for the leisurely return cruise to Pinhão. Your chauffeur will be waiting at the quay to drive you back to your Porto hotel, where the tour concludes.
