Profile of Taittinger
One of the great and established names in the Champagne region, Taittinger, was founded in 1734 by Jacques Fourneaux, a visionary who sowed the seeds for this giant Champagne house. They produce around 400,000 cases a year of always reliable and delicious Champagne cuvee, Brut Reserve. That sets the scene for their exquisite vintage wines and exceptional Blancs de Blancs prestige cuvee Comtes de Champagne, matched by an equally exquisite and very rare rose. Taittinger has quite an empire, owning a Loire sparkling wine house and a winery in California. Their winery’s location in Champagne is right in the center of Reims.
Taittinger enjoyed a relatively quiet and uneventful history for many years, as the Fourneaux family business prospered and the prestige of the house grew. However, in 2005 the house was brought by Starwood Capital, an American investment company. The French could not believe it, an American owned Champagne House! Mercifully for them, after a few years, Taittinger was sold again to Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger, grandson of the founder, and the French bank Crédit Agricole. Since then, the family has clawed back control from the Bank, leaving them with a minority share. A classic example of French Patriotism indeed!
Taittinger may have experienced some ownership changes in recent years, but thankfully, one thing has remained constant: the wines’ quality. Taittinger is the connoisseurs’ choice of Champagne, wonderful elegance, and finesses with a complexity and richness on the palate. Comte’s de Champagne is undoubtedly one of the finest examples from the region and sets the standard that others must follow. Surprisingly, the private visit is intimate. We organize vertical tastings, tours, and events at their main winery and beautiful Chateau La Marquetterie for corporate groups. Contact us for more information.
