Domaine Comte Senard Winery Guide

Winery Overview

Domaine Comte Senard is one of the loveliest fine wine estates in the Burgundy wine region, a personal favorite. This formidable father and daughter-team of Philippe and Lorraine Senard make superb, age-worthy wines from the renowned vineyards of the Aloxe-Corton commune. From the humble village wines right up to Clos du Roi and Corton-Charlemagne’s mighty Grand Cru vineyards, their output is consistent, top-quality, and in high demand. Combining the best qualities of integrity, family spirit, and know-how, the latest generation represented by Lorraine is expressing the unique qualities of the Corton terroir more fully and completely than ever before, thanks to her deep understanding of the vineyards. Not to mention the care and attention shown day in and day out by Lorraine’s vibrant and dynamic viticultural team.

Domaine Comte Senard has a long history of cultivating vineyards in Aloxe-Corton and has been celebrated as a top producer of red and white Burgundy since the 19th century. The domaine’s history began in 1857 when the current generation’s great-grandfather planted an extraordinary vineyard. The man was Jules Senard, and the vineyard is today known as Clos de Meix. It is still under the exclusive ownership of the Senard family and is renowned for Pinot Noir of exceptional grace, perfume, and longevity. After his death, the domaine remained in family control. Successive generations have judiciously added only the best vineyard holdings to the Senard portfolio, including Corton-Charlemagne and Clos du Roi. The property’s reputation grew, as did the renown of its wines until the demand was far exceeding supply. That remains the case today as Philippe and Lorraine continue to steer their legacy to greatness. Lorraine formally joined the team in 2000, making her first Burgundies in 2005. Her father was not disappointed!

Lorraine Senard is today producing stylish, structured reds and whites at every level. The wines, which are intensely sought after, are handled carefully with restrained oak, aged in incredible cellars constructed in the 14th century by Benedictine monks of the famous Abbaye de Sainte Marguerite. The resulting wines display richness, depth, and elegance while remaining true to their origins. Anyone who has tasted the mighty Clos du Roi from this 1st rate domaine can testify to that!
