Domaine de la Vougeraie Winery Guide

Winery Overview

Domaine de la Vougeraie is a fine wine estate in the darling Côte de Nuits that, despite its relatively recent origins as a unified concern, is today one of the region’s finest wine producers, much-lauded for both the quality and diversity of its wines. Indeed, fellow properties must cast a slightly envious eye over their vineyard holdings, including legendary Grand Cru vineyards such as Clos de Vougeot and Bonnes-Mares. Quality dedication is at the heart and soul of this winery: the vineyards are certified organic and treated bio-dynamically with the utmost care. But perhaps the most striking feature of Domaine Vougeraie is their insistence on low yields, often less than 30 hectolitres per hectare, which is immediately apparent in wines of richness, depth, and real class – superlative in every way!

The Domaine was officially founded in 1999, created from the union of several estates across the region acquired by the legendary Boisset family. Today, it is run by 3rd generation vintners Jean-Charles and Nathalie Boisset, although patriarch Jean-Claude remains involved. He started his adventure in 1964, acquiring his first five hectares of land, known as “Les Evocelles,” north of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation. Ever an astute entrepreneur, Jean-Claude acquired more vineyards across the best sub-regions of Burgundy, including Grand Cru and Premier Cru sites in Corton-Charlemagne, Pommard, and Beaune, all renowned vineyards. In 1996, the family’s legacy grew again with the acquisition of another major estate. This remarkable transition from a small grower to a major producer is one of Burgundy’s greatest success stories, a testament to the hard work and resolve of Jean-Claude.

However, regardless of the size of this great name, meticulous, painstaking care in the vineyard has always remained at the core of their value system. In keeping with modern practices, the estate converted to bio-dynamic cultivation over the past ten years and is now a leading light in sustainability for the Burgundy region. The overriding aim has always remained the same for this family: producing excellent wines that evoke their terroir, a sense of place, and a snapshot in time. Anyone who tastes their way through this superb range of Crus is left in no doubt; this is Burgundy at its very finest.
