Founded in the 1950s as a commercial winery, Segura Viudas actually dates back to the 11th century. Located on a lovely estate with modern facilities and the remnants of the area’s diverse architectural styles: Visigoth, Romanesque and Gothic. There is a 13th century “masia”, a stone Catalan villa. Winemaking in the area began in earnest with new experimentation and viticultural techniques at the end of the 19th century. Understanding the region’s indigenous varieties, coupled with new techniques imported from France’s Champagne region, sparked the big “Cava Boom” in the late 1800s. Segura Viudas is an excellent Cava house also making top class still white and red wines. The winery is owned by the Freixenet group, one of the leaders of “Wine Tourism” in Spain. Highly acclaimed wines include the intricately bottled Reserva Heredad Cava, the deliciously fresh Creu de Lavit still white and the faultlessly perfect aperitif nonvintage Cava Rosado.
