Winery Overview

The Segura brothers acquired the estate in the 1950s, though Segura Viudas’ history dates back much further, to the 12th century. Located on a lovely estate with modern facilities and remnants of the area’s diverse architectural past, there is a 12th-century “masia,” a traditional stone Catalan farmhouse.

Winemaking in the area began in earnest with new experimentation and viticultural techniques at the end of the 19th century. Understanding the Penedès region’s indigenous varieties, coupled with new techniques imported from France’s Champagne region, sparked the big “Cava Boom” in the late 1800s. Segura Viudas is an excellent Cava house also making top-class still white and red wines.

Freixenet acquired Segura Viudas in 1984, and the winery today forms part of the Henkell Freixenet group. Highly acclaimed wines include the intricately bottled Reserva Heredad Cava, the deliciously fresh Creu de Lavit still white, and the faultlessly perfect aperitif Brut Rosé.
