At first glance, Greve is the poor relation to Tuscany’s surfeit of gorgeous towns and villages. The architecture is admittedly unspectacular when compared to its neighbors, yet there is much to get excited about in Greve. The main town in the Chianti Florentino, Greve is the atmospheric, vibrant hub of the local wine industry and has a lovely market-town air. Friendly locals will gladly show you Greve’s attractive, historical central square and its inviting cafes and restaurants. But it is the Vignamaggio, situated 5km southeast of Greve, that draws the biggest crowds. Mona Lisa Gherardini, subject of Leonardo da Vinci’s world-famous painting, married into the family that built this spectacular villa in the 14th century. It featured in Kenneth Branagh’s film adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing. A true masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance.
